Matilda came to us on February 4th 1987. She was confiscated, along with three others by The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Operation Slow Poke, from an individual attempting to sell them on the black market. Sadly, when she was younger she was not fed a proper diet which led to her developing metabolic bone disease, which is permanent damage.

These tortoises are listed as a Critically Endangered species due to poaching for sale on the black market and use in traditional medicine..
