African Spurred (Sulcata) Tortoise

Around 2010 a call came in reporting a large, foot long turtle that was wandering around someone’s front yard in West Hartford CT. When the turtle was brought in it was discovered that it was a large desert tortoise from Africa! Sulcata tortoises are the 3rd largest turtles in the world weighing over 100 pounds when they are full grown.

Either Kitty dug his way out of his owner’s back yard and wandered down the street eating grass or he was released because he was getting too big to care for. Had he not been found before the winter there would be no way he could have survived our long New England winters.
