Eastern Box Turtle at CT Wildlife Center

Zeus

Eastern Box Turtle

Zeus has called the Center his home longer than any other animal at the Center. We believe that Zeus was taken out of the wild about 40 years ago by someone that thought they were doing the right thing. They dropped Zeus off at our doorstep without any information of where he came from. Due to a box turtles incredibly strong homing instincts we were not able to put him back in the wild. If we put him in another good habitat he would try to go home even if it was miles away and have many dangerous roads and barriers in his way. Now Zeus spends his days at the Center teaching children about not only box turtles, but about conservation. Most turtle populations are in serious decline and the eastern box turtle is listed as a “Species of Special Concern” in Connecticut.
