Seneca

Coyote

Hailing from Dow, Illinois Seneca was found abandoned with her three litter mates after their mother had been hit by a car. The individual who originally found her had apparently kept them for a while, raising them like pets, before surrendering them to Treehouse Wildlife Center, which is a wildlife rehabilitation center in the area. The staff were able to get all three of her litter mates to wild up, but Seneca had become too habituated to people. Already having two non-releasable coyotes at their facility they simply did not have the space to house her. It was at this point that they started to look for a permanent home for Seneca, after talking with several other zoos and museums around the country they decided that the Connecticut Wildlife Center’s West Hartford Campus would be the best fit for her. Sanctuary Curator, Nick Barnett went down to Illinois to visit and work with her for a couple days before arranging a date to transport her back to Connecticut. On Tuesday, June 20th 2017 Nick Barnett met Treehouse Wildlife Center’s Director of Operations, Rachael Heaton, in Mansfield, Ohio around 2:00 p.m. to drive the coyote back to the Museum. After several pit stops on the way to West Hartford, to go for a quick walk and go to the bathroom Seneca arrived at midnight Wednesday, June 30th. She has become an instant hit with both visitors and staff and can often be found taking a quick nap on her wooden platforms.
